HISTORY OF 420

Marijuana smokers and non-smokers both acknowledge April 20th or 4/20 as a public holiday for cannabis tradition, but few really know how the date was selected. Some people say “420” is code for “marijuana smoking in progress” among police officers and some remember 4/20 is also the birthday of Adolf Hitler. Others go as far as to quote Bob Dylan’s song “Rainy Day Women #12 & 35” because 12 multiplied by 35 equals 420. In short, these past rumors about how marijuana was linked to 20th April and 4/20 are incorrect. The most credible story traces 4/20 to Marin County, Calif.Five students at San Rafael High School met at 4:20 p.m. in 1971 to partake by the campus statue of chemist Louis Pasteur. They chose that particular period because extracurricular activities were usually over by that time. This group—Mark Gravich, Steve Capper, Dave Reddix, Larry Schwartz and Jeffrey Noel—were named the ‘Waldos” because they met at a wall. The ‘Waldos’ would say “420” to each other as slang for Marijuana.”We were tired of the Friday night football scene with all the jocks,” said Reddix to TIME in 2017. We were the guys lying in the stands and smoking a doobie, questioning what we were doing there.”

Long after 4:20 p.m., the shenanigans continued, too. Under the influence, the gang challenged one another to find even-more fascinating stuff to do, naming their adventures “safaris.” Later, Reddix’s brother helped him get to work as a roadie with Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh, so the band is said to have helped publicize the term “420.” A group of Deadheads in Oakland distributed flyers on Dec. 28, 1990, inviting people to smoke “420” on April. One wound up with an authority on cannabis culture, Steve Bloom, a former reporter for High Times magazine. In 1991, the magazine printed the flyer and continued referencing the number… Shortly, the code for marijuana became internationally known as “420”. The outlet confirmed in 1998 that only the “Waldos” were the 420 “inventors.” Bloom, now Celebstoner.com’s publisher, has credited the people who wrote the flyer with the reputation of the date as an annual pot smokers’ gathering. “They wished people throughout the world to meet each year on one day and simultaneously smoke pot collectively,” he wrote in 2015. “The idea of a stoner holiday was born, which was turned into April 20.”
